MVP and Axiom are not rival brands — they are two lineups from the same company, MVP Disc Sports, molded with the same patented GYRO® overmold construction and sold in the same plastic blends. The real difference is catalog philosophy: MVP's lineup is roughly twice as deep and leans neutral-to-overstable, while Axiom's is smaller, skews noticeably more understable, and carries the color-contrast Prism plastics as its cosmetic signature.

- Pick MVP if you want the deeper catalog, the harder-finishing utility molds, and the widest spread of speeds. MVP covers slots Axiom simply doesn't fill — a 1-speed putter (the Glitch, 1/7/0/0), a 4-fade midrange (the Deflector, 5/3.5/0/4), and a 13-speed understable bomber (the Catalyst, 13/5.5/-2/2).
- Pick Axiom if you throw under about 350 feet, want more help getting a disc to turn, or you like being able to see the overmold. Axiom's counterparts are usually a half-point to a full point less stable than MVP's, and the Prism plastics make the two-material construction visible in the disc.
- The honest answer: there is no reason to pick a side. The molds are made on the same tooling standards in the same plastics, and most players who bag one brand end up bagging both. Choose by mold, not by logo.
Are MVP and Axiom the same company?
Yes. Axiom is a sister brand of MVP, both owned and produced by MVP Disc Sports, with Streamline Discs as the third brand in the family. This is not a licensing deal or a distribution partnership — it is one manufacturer running three brand identities out of one operation.
The chronology in our database matches that story. The oldest MVP molds we track are the Ion (PDGA-approved 2009) and the Vector (2010), from MVP's earliest years. Axiom's molds cluster hard on a single year: seven of the fourteen Axiom discs in our database — the Envy, Crave, Virus, Insanity, Fireball, Theory, and Proxy — carry a 2014 PDGA approval. That en-masse approval batch is the signature of a brand launching a full lineup at once rather than growing one mold at a time.
One caution worth stating plainly: a PDGA approval year is the date a mold cleared the technical standards process, not necessarily the date it hit shelves. It is a reliable lower bound on a mold's age and a useful way to see launch batches, but it should not be read as a release date.
Do they share the same technology?
They do, and this is the single most important thing to understand about the family. Every MVP and Axiom disc uses GYRO® overmold construction: a denser outer rim molded onto a lighter inner core, as two distinct pieces of plastic, rather than the single homogeneous piece of plastic that every other major manufacturer injection-molds.
The stated goal is to push mass outward to the rim. A disc with more of its weight concentrated at the edge carries more rotational inertia for the same total weight, which the company argues produces a more stable, longer-lasting spin — the gyroscopic effect the name refers to. Whether you find that claim persuasive or not, the construction is real and you can feel it: overmolded discs have a distinct hand-feel where the rim meets the flight plate, and on the Prism and Fission variants you can see the seam.
Both brands also share Fission, MVP's lightweight-core technology, which uses a foamed inner core to drop the core's density further and shift proportionally more of the disc's mass into the rim. Fission appears across both catalogs — on the MVP Wave, Photon, and Tesla, and on the Axiom Hex, Crave, and Defy, among others. There is no MVP-only or Axiom-only version of the underlying technology.
Do they use the same plastics?
Almost entirely, yes. Run the plastic lists for every MVP and Axiom mold in our database side by side and the vocabulary is nearly identical:

The only meaningful split in our data is the Prism line, which appears exclusively on Axiom molds — the Pyro in Prism Neutron and Prism Proton, the Envy in Prism Plasma. Prism is a deliberate branding move: because a GYRO disc is two pieces of plastic, running the rim and the core in contrasting colors puts the construction on display. It is Axiom's most recognizable visual asset and the closest thing to a genuine plastic difference between the two brands.

How do the catalogs actually differ?
This is where the brands genuinely separate, and the numbers are clear. Across the 29 MVP molds and 14 Axiom molds in our database:
- Average turn: MVP −1.00, Axiom −1.43. Axiom's catalog carries close to half a point more high-speed turn on average.
- Average fade: MVP 1.55, Axiom 1.54 — effectively identical.
- Average turn + fade (a rough net-stability figure): MVP +0.55, Axiom +0.11. Axiom's average mold sits nearly neutral; MVP's sits meaningfully on the stable side.
- Catalog depth: MVP has roughly twice as many molds, and it is the brand that fills the extreme slots at both ends.
The takeaway is not that "Axiom is the understable brand" — both catalogs have understable and overstable options, and Axiom's Fireball (9/3.5/0/3.5) is as overstable as anything MVP makes at that speed. Read down that last column and the pattern is hard to miss: in ten of these thirteen matched roles, the Axiom mold is the less stable of the pair. The exceptions are worth knowing, because they run against the stereotype — the Axiom Defy fades half a point harder than the MVP Photon, the Axiom Pixel is slightly more stable than the MVP Watt, and the Catalyst and Excite come out even. "Axiom is the understable brand" is a useful rule of thumb, not a law.
The closest twins in the family
Two pairs are worth calling out because they are as close as any two discs from "different brands" get.
MVP Servo vs Axiom Crave. Both are 6-speed fairway drivers. Both are listed at 21.1 cm diameter, 1.8 cm rim width, 1.2 cm rim depth, 1.4 cm height, and a 175 g maximum weight. Both are 6/5/−1. The only published difference in the entire spec sheet is fade: 2 on the Servo, 1 on the Crave. If you want a straight, controllable fairway driver and you're deciding between them, you are deciding how hard you want the finish — nothing else.
MVP Photon vs Axiom Defy. Both are 11-speed distance drivers listed at 21.1 cm diameter, 2.2 cm rim width, and 1.1 cm rim depth, and both are 11/5/−1. The Photon fades 2.5, the Defy fades 3. Again: the same rim profile, the same first three flight numbers, half a point of stability apart. The Defy is the one to reach for in wind or on a forehand; the Photon is the slightly longer, slightly straighter option.
These pairs are the clearest evidence that the brand names are marketing surface, not engineering. If MVP and Axiom were genuinely separate manufacturers, two molds from different companies would not share a dimension sheet to the tenth of a centimeter.
Where does Streamline fit?
Streamline Discs is the third brand under MVP Disc Sports, and its molds in our database — the Trace (11/5/−1/2), Lift (9/5/−2/1.5), Drift (7/5/−2/1), Echo (5/5/−1.5/1), Pilot (2/5/0/1), and Stabilizer (3/3.5/0/3) — carry PDGA approvals from 2017 onward, making it the youngest of the three.
Streamline is positioned as the more conventional line: its discs use standard single-plastic construction rather than the GYRO overmold, and the catalog leans toward accessible, glide-forward molds for developing arms. If you like the MVP family's plastics but don't like the feel of an overmolded rim, Streamline is the answer within the family.
Which one should you bag?
Because the technology and plastics are shared, this decision reduces to three practical questions:
- How far do you throw? Under roughly 350 feet, Axiom's extra half-point to full point of turn is genuinely useful — it's the difference between a disc that finishes its flight and one that dumps left early. Above that, MVP's more stable counterparts will hold their lines better.
- What slot are you filling? For extreme utility molds — maximum overstability, maximum speed on the stable side, the widest range of putter feels — MVP's deeper catalog simply has more options. Axiom is not trying to cover every slot.
- Do you care what it looks like? This sounds trivial and isn't. Prism plastics show the overmold, and a lot of players buy Axiom specifically because the discs are the most visually distinctive thing in the bag.
What you should not do is treat this as a loyalty decision. Unlike the Innova-versus-Discraft question, where two independent companies genuinely mold, rate, and finish discs differently, an MVP bag and an Axiom bag are the same discs with different stamps and slightly different stability targets. Bag the Hex next to the Entropy next to the Photon and nothing about the family will fight you.
