The MVP Impulse is a 9-speed understable distance driver. With published flight numbers of 9 / 5 / -3 / 1, it is most often described as suited for hyzer-flip drives that carry to full distance, long turnover lines that stay turned.

Overview

The MVP Impulse is the understable end of MVP's overmolded wide-rim distance-driver class, rated 9 / 5 / -3 / 1.[1][3] MVP describes its flight as a responsive understable profile with extended glide: low- and average-power throwers get a straight-to-understable long precision driver, while power throwers get controllable hyzer flips and a range of flip and turnover utility lines.[1] The GYRO overmold is the point of difference — the weighted outer rim is what lets a -3 driver still finish with a hint of fade instead of simply turning over and burning out.[1][3]

Flight numbers describe the published behavior of the disc when thrown at its design speed. Real-world flight varies with plastic, weight, age, and thrower power. The community-averaged numbers above reflect crowd-sourced observations from real throws — typically slightly more understable than the manufacturer's published values, which is the most consistent pattern across nearly every commercial mold.

The Impulse is a distance tool rather than a control driver. MVP recommends it for controllable hyzerflips at high power and for reliably straight-to-turnover distance lines at low power, and specifically calls out tailwind and roller distance lines as shots its responsive flip enables.[1] Disc Golf Puttheads frames it the same way — the most understable driver in the class, built for effortless carry at slower arm speeds.[3] It is not the disc for a headwind or a tight tunnel.

Plastic blend significantly affects flight character. Premium plastics like Champion, Z, or C-Line generally fly more overstable when fresh and hold their stability over time. Base plastics like DX, Pro, or Active beat in faster and become more understable workhorses with use.

History

The Impulse was approved by the PDGA on February 22, 2014 under certification 14-12, measuring 21.0 cm in diameter, 1.4 cm tall, with a 1.2 cm rim depth and a 2.0 cm rim thickness, capped at 174.3 g.[2] It was released to complete MVP's wide-rim distance class alongside the Motion, Tesla and Inertia, filling the understable slot.[1] One wrinkle is worth flagging: MVP's own product page is internally inconsistent about the rim, filing the Impulse under an '18.5mm Distance Drivers' class and listing 18.5 mm in the specification table while the body copy on the same page says the disc 'completes our 20mm-wing distance driver class'; the PDGA's independent measurement is 2.0 cm.[1][2] MVP currently lists it in Neutron, Proton, Fission and Eclipse at 155–175 g.[1]
