The Innova Atlas is a 5-speed stable midrange. With published flight numbers of 5 / 4 / 0 / 1, it is most often described as suited for straight midrange shots that need minimal ground play, technical lines through gaps.

Overview

The Innova Atlas is a 5-speed overmold midrange rated 5/4/0/1.[2] Innova describes it as an overmold that "combines a firm, low-profile flight plate with a grippy rim," flying straight with minimal fade and forgiving small throwing errors better than any other Innova midrange.[2] Four "compass points" on the underside mark where the rim is injected over the flight plate.[2] At 21.8 cm the Atlas is one of Innova's widest midranges.[3] PDGA specifications: 21.8 cm diameter, 1.7 cm height, 1.4 cm rim depth, 1.4 cm rim thickness, and a 180.9 g maximum weight.[3]

Flight numbers describe the published behavior of the disc when thrown at its design speed. Real-world flight varies with plastic, weight, age, and thrower power. The community-averaged numbers above reflect crowd-sourced observations from real throws — typically slightly more understable than the manufacturer's published values, which is the most consistent pattern across nearly every commercial mold.

Innova lists the Atlas's best uses as technical shots, accurate approaches and controlled midrange drives.[2] IsaacSam explains the design intent directly: the idea was a straight midrange with minimal ground play, and the soft overmolded rim is what kills the roll-away after landing.[1] Innova notes it performs for both backhand and forehand throwers, and designer Dave Dunipace calls it "a very straight flyer with good range" and the "best mid for sidearm."[2]

Star, Champion, XT

Plastic blend significantly affects flight character. Premium plastics like Champion, Z, or C-Line generally fly more overstable when fresh and hold their stability over time. Base plastics like DX, Pro, or Active beat in faster and become more understable workhorses with use.

History

The Atlas was PDGA-approved on June 18, 2013 under certification number 13-40.[3] It was Innova's first overmold disc, made in response to the growing popularity of MVP's overmold line; according to IsaacSam, Innova worked around MVP's patent by attaching the overmold mechanically rather than injecting plastic around the disc the way MVP does, which makes the Atlas somewhat less impact-resistant than an MVP or Axiom disc.[1] IsaacSam describes the mold itself as a faster version of the Coyote, and reports the Atlas became a solid seller for Innova despite an already crowded midrange lineup — though he has never seen one in MPO or FPO coverage, with its fans concentrated among intermediate players and beginners.[1] It remains in production in Star, Champion and XT at 165–180 g.[2] Note that Innova's product page has its "Diameter" and "Rim Width" labels transposed — the 21.8 cm figure is the diameter, matching the PDGA record.[2][3]
