The MVP Spin is a 2.5-speed understable putt & approach. With published flight numbers of 2.5 / 4 / -2 / 0, it is most often described as suited for lofty, glide-heavy approach shots, turnover upshots around obstacles.

Overview

The MVP Spin is an understable putt-and-approach disc rated 2.5/4/-2/0 and filed in MVP's 11mm Putt/Approach class, the same class as the Ion and Anode.[2] MVP's own description is short: “the Spin has a deep profile like the Ion and Anode, which makes it great for glide-filled lofty flights. Its controlled understability makes it suitable for both new and advanced players alike.”[2][3] Like every MVP mold it uses the GYRO overmold construction, with the rim moulded separately from the flight plate.[2] The PDGA records it at 21.0 cm diameter, 1.9 cm height, 1.5 cm rim depth and a 1.1 cm rim, with a 174.3 g maximum — a 7.1% rim-depth-to-diameter ratio, putting it among the deepest putter profiles in the sport.[1]

Flight numbers describe the published behavior of the disc when thrown at its design speed. Real-world flight varies with plastic, weight, age, and thrower power. The community-averaged numbers above reflect crowd-sourced observations from real throws — typically slightly more understable than the manufacturer's published values, which is the most consistent pattern across nearly every commercial mold.

MVP's flight-chart notes describe the Spin as a disc with two personalities: “at short range, the Spin is a point-and-shoot straight putter, but at approach and driving distances, the Spin will exhibit a responsive turn that can be manipulated by the thrower.”[2] In practice that means straight putting inside the circle, lofty approach shots where glide matters more than fade, and turnover upshots that bend around an obstacle and stay there. MVP calls it “a putter that any throwing style or skill level can throw straight.”[2] It is sold from 155 g to 175 g, so light runs are available for lower-power arms.[2]

Plastic blend significantly affects flight character. Premium plastics like Champion, Z, or C-Line generally fly more overstable when fresh and hold their stability over time. Base plastics like DX, Pro, or Active beat in faster and become more understable workhorses with use.

History

The PDGA approved the Spin on 20 January 2016 under certification number 16-06.[1] Two days later the PDGA published MVP's launch statement, which set out the distribution route: the Spin “will debut in the 2016 Circuit Event Series,” and “those who participate in the 2016 Circuit will have the first chance to try out the Spin, as well as other new forthcoming models in the Circuit Event Series.”[3] That is the same player-pack debut MVP used for the Signal later the same year. MVP currently lists the Spin in Neutron, R2 Neutron and Electron.[2] Proton is absent from that list, but a Proton Spin appears among the photographs on the PDGA certification record, and several entries in MVP's own “Spin in the Bag” table are Proton discs — so Proton Spins are documented but are not a current stock blend.[1][2] The throwers listed here come from that same MVP table: Sarah Hokom bags a 166 g Electron Spin and Elaine King a 170 g Proton.[2] One data error on MVP's page is worth flagging — the table lists Mike Inscho's Electron Spin at 175 g, above the 174.3 g PDGA maximum for the mold.[1][2]
