The Prodigy MX-1 is a 5-speed very overstable midrange. With published flight numbers of 5 / 3 / 0 / 4, it is most often described as suited for full-power forehand approaches that must finish hard, headwind midrange shots.

Overview

The Prodigy MX-1 is a small-diameter, very overstable midrange built to finish the same way regardless of release angle. Prodigy’s own copy calls it “a very overstable midrange disc” that “is designed to have a predictable finish no matter the release angle,” and adds that “in your hand, it feels similar to a beaded disc but doesn’t have a bead, and its diameter is slightly smaller than traditional midranges.”[2] The PDGA measured it at 21.3cm across with a 2.0cm height, a 1.5cm rim and a 176.8g maximum.[1] Under Prodigy’s own naming system the trailing numeral denotes stability, with “‘1’ being the most overstable.”[3]

Flight numbers describe the published behavior of the disc when thrown at its design speed. Real-world flight varies with plastic, weight, age, and thrower power. The community-averaged numbers above reflect crowd-sourced observations from real throws — typically slightly more understable than the manufacturer's published values, which is the most consistent pattern across nearly every commercial mold.

The MX-1 is a wind and power disc. Prodigy states that “whether you throw it backhand or sidearm, the MX-1 can handle power and wind with no problem.”[2] That makes it a forehand utility midrange, a headwind approach, and a dependable hyzer that will not flip up when overpowered.[2][5] The smaller diameter and beadless-but-bead-like feel suit players stepping down from an overstable driver rather than looking for a straight-line midrange — Prodigy does not market it as one.[2]

Plastic blend significantly affects flight character. Premium plastics like Champion, Z, or C-Line generally fly more overstable when fresh and hold their stability over time. Base plastics like DX, Pro, or Active beat in faster and become more understable workhorses with use.

History

The MX-1 was PDGA-approved on 4 April 2022 under certification 22-48.[1] Prodigy has published no launch announcement for it — unlike the MX-2, which received its own news post — so 2022 is an approval year rather than a documented retail release date. Prodigy’s naming-system article describes the “PX, MX, and FX Series, which are slightly faster versions of the PA, M, and F Series discs,” even though the MX-1 and the M1 share the same speed 5 rating.[3] The flight numbers have been revised once: that same article records an original 5/2/0/4 rating updated to 5/3/0/4 in 2023, which explains why Foundation Disc Golf and Only The Best Discs both still print 5/2/0/4.[3][4][5] Prodigy’s product page also contradicts itself, with a legacy specification tab reading “Stable” while the current specification block on the same page reads “Overstable” and the body copy says “very overstable.”[2] No designer has been credited for the mold, and no professional player has been documented bagging one.
