The Discmania Mutant is a 5-speed very overstable midrange. With published flight numbers of 5 / 3 / 0 / 4, it is most often described as suited for headwind midrange shots that must not turn over, forehand approaches with a hard, predictable finish.

Overview

The Mutant is Discmania's most overstable midrange, rated 5 | 3 | 0 | 4 and built around an unusual premise: "the design principle for this mold was to create a disc with no round surfaces."[1] The result is an angular, faceted profile that Discmania calls "a truly unique midrange — an extremely overstable midrange with low glide that can handle even the toughest of headwinds."[1] PDGA measurements are 21.7 cm diameter, 1.8 cm height, 1.2 cm rim depth and a 1.3 cm rim, with a 180.1 g maximum.[2] Discmania's own copy calls it the "cybertruck" of midranges.[4]

Flight numbers describe the published behavior of the disc when thrown at its design speed. Real-world flight varies with plastic, weight, age, and thrower power. The community-averaged numbers above reflect crowd-sourced observations from real throws — typically slightly more understable than the manufacturer's published values, which is the most consistent pattern across nearly every commercial mold.

The Mutant is a dependability tool rather than a distance tool. Its glide rating of 3 is deliberately low, which keeps it from floating past the target and makes it hold a line in wind that would push a glidier midrange around.[1][3] Discmania recommends it for both backhand and sidearm "and situations where you need extreme dependability."[1] In practice that means headwind approaches, forehand shots that need a hard finish, spike hyzers that drop and stop, and flex or skip lines around obstacles. Discmania is candid about who it suits: the Mutant is "not necessarily recommended for new players, but it can be highly useful in tricky situation for all skill levels," and the company calls it "one of the premiere utility discs ever made for disc golf."[4]

Neo, Lux Vapor

Plastic blend significantly affects flight character. Premium plastics like Champion, Z, or C-Line generally fly more overstable when fresh and hold their stability over time. Base plastics like DX, Pro, or Active beat in faster and become more understable workhorses with use.

History

The Mutant was PDGA approved on March 22, 2021 under certification 21-33.[2] It belongs to Discmania's Evolution line. Neo is the stock plastic; every current Lux Vapor Mutant is a limited or collaboration run, including Huk Lab TriFly and Huk Bar editions and an HSCo Black Cat.[1][4] Discmania's European store sells the Neo Mutant in 170–172 g, 173–176 g and 177–180 g brackets, while its US store currently lists only a 177 g-and-up class.[1][4] The mold is absent from Discmania's out-of-production list and remains current.[1][4] Discmania's published specification block matches the PDGA record exactly — 21.7 cm diameter, 180.1 g maximum, 1.8 cm height, 1.3 cm wing width and 1.2 cm rim depth — which is not always the case with manufacturer spec tables.[1][2] Two named editions exist, a Neo Mutant with a Kyle Klein mini stamp and an Alden Harris Team Signing Edition in Lux Vapor, but a signature stamp is not by itself evidence that a player bags the mold, and no source confirms a tour player carrying one, so no throwers are listed here.[1] One quirk worth noting: Discmania's own model list gives the MD5 the identical 5 | 3 | 0 | 4 rating, so the two overstable midranges are separated by feel, rim shape and diameter rather than by published flight numbers.[1]
