The Innova Monster is a 10-speed very overstable distance driver. With published flight numbers of 10 / 3 / 0 / 5, it is most often described as suited for forehand drives that need a hard, dependable finish, headwind drives that would turn over any other 10-speed.

Overview

The Innova Monster is a very overstable 10-speed distance driver rated 10/3/0/5.[2][3] Innova built it as a faster, more stable answer to the Firebird and describes it as one of its most stable, powerful wind-beating drivers — a disc for players who can turn other molds over into a stiff headwind.[3] With a 2.0 cm rim, only 3 glide and 5 fade, it gives up carry in exchange for an utterly predictable finish.[2] Innova states plainly that the Monster is best suited to more advanced players; it needs real arm speed before its flight makes sense.[3]

Flight numbers describe the published behavior of the disc when thrown at its design speed. Real-world flight varies with plastic, weight, age, and thrower power. The community-averaged numbers above reflect crowd-sourced observations from real throws — typically slightly more understable than the manufacturer's published values, which is the most consistent pattern across nearly every commercial mold.

Reach for the Monster when the wind or the line demands a disc that will not turn. It is a forehand and thumber specialist — IsaacSam's Innova guide identifies forehand rollers, forehands and thumbers as the mold's main uses.[1] It also works as a headwind driver and a spike-hyzer tool that drops hard and stays put.[3][5] It is not a distance disc for most players: three points of glide and five of fade mean it finishes left (for a right-hand backhand) long before a Destroyer would.

Champion, Star

Plastic blend significantly affects flight character. Premium plastics like Champion, Z, or C-Line generally fly more overstable when fresh and hold their stability over time. Base plastics like DX, Pro, or Active beat in faster and become more understable workhorses with use.

History

The Monster was PDGA-approved on January 26, 2003 under certification number 03-03.[2] IsaacSam's Innova guide records that two versions existed: an 'L' version run in Star and Pro-line that flew much like a Discmania PD, and an 'X' version run in Champion that was, in his words, stupidly overstable — it was the Champion 'X' that found a following among advanced and professional players.[1] The same guide credits the rise of the Starfire with pushing the Monster out of the spotlight, and later groups it with the Beast and TeeRex as molds that virtually vanished from touring players' bags.[1] Innova still lists the Monster in Champion and Star, and its factory store carries both as full-production discs.[3][4] No Pro-line Monster appears in any current Innova listing, so that plastic is historical only. Innova's product page carries no player testimonial, and we could not verify any specific touring professional bagging the mold.
