Overview

The Innova Manta is an understable midrange rated 5/5/-2/1.[2][3] Innova describes it as a VTech version of the Stingray that offers more control, with a gentle turn under power and a smooth, straight glide when thrown flat at moderate power.[3] VTech is Innova's name for the convex rim shape it uses for torque resistance and reduced fade, and Innova files the Manta under that category.[5] IsaacSam's guide reads the mold as a Stingray given a convex edge and a bead, making it slightly faster and slightly more stable than its parent.[1]

Flight numbers describe the published behavior of the disc when thrown at its design speed. Real-world flight varies with plastic, weight, age, and thrower power. The community-averaged numbers above reflect crowd-sourced observations from real throws — typically slightly more understable than the manufacturer's published values, which is the most consistent pattern across nearly every commercial mold.

The Manta earns its place as a turnover and roller disc. IsaacSam identifies turnover shots and rollers as its core uses and calls it a great beginner midrange.[1] Innova lists controlled turnover shots and finesse midrange lines, and recommends it for beginners.[3] Thrown flat at moderate power it flies straight; thrown with more power it works right (for a right-hand backhand) and finishes gently on a single point of fade.[3] It beats in toward a Stingray-like flight rather than going flippy.[1]

Plastic blend significantly affects flight character. Premium plastics like Champion, Z, or C-Line generally fly more overstable when fresh and hold their stability over time. Base plastics like DX, Pro, or Active beat in faster and become more understable workhorses with use.

History

The Manta was PDGA-approved on January 24, 2017 under certification number 17-07, and the PDGA announced it the following day quoting Innova's 5/5/-2/1 rating and a 150–180 gram range.[2][4] Unlike Innova's 3-Series retools, which were certified en masse later in 2017, the Manta went through certification on its own. Innova launched it across an unusually broad plastic lineup — DX, Champion, Star and GStar — which IsaacSam reads as a sign the company held the mold in high regard.[1][3] His verdict on its commercial fate is that it has been met with positive reviews but struggles to stand out in a very crowded Innova midrange lineup.[1] Two figures disagree across sources: Innova's page lists a 21.7 cm diameter against the PDGA's measured 21.8 cm, and lists GStar at 170–190 grams, a range that exceeds the PDGA maximum of 180.9 grams and appears to be a page error.[2][3] No touring professional is documented bagging the mold.
