The Innova Wahoo is a 12-speed understable distance driver. With published flight numbers of 12 / 6 / -2 / 2, it is most often described as suited for long drives over open water, distance for moderate arm speeds without a max-weight disc.

Overview

The Innova Wahoo is a 12/6/-2/2 distance driver whose defining feature is that it floats. Innova describes it as "a long range distance driver that floats in water and will keep you at the top of the food chain," and says it "is a fast disc with a lot of glide" with "a flight similar to a Dragon with increased speed and range."[2][3] The floating is a function of weight rather than shape: Innova sells the Wahoo only in a floating R-Pro blend at 168–172 g, well under the 174.3 g maximum the PDGA measured.[2][4] The mold is a thick, bulky driver — 21.0 cm across with a 2.4 cm rim and a 2.0 cm height.[4]

Flight numbers describe the published behavior of the disc when thrown at its design speed. Real-world flight varies with plastic, weight, age, and thrower power. The community-averaged numbers above reflect crowd-sourced observations from real throws — typically slightly more understable than the manufacturer's published values, which is the most consistent pattern across nearly every commercial mold.

Reach for a Wahoo when the shot crosses water and losing the disc is the real risk. It is also a workable distance option for players who do not need max weight, since every run sits in the high 160s.[2] Team Innova's Alan Beaver, quoted on Innova's own page, says it "flies straight and slightly stable on drives for less powerful throwers like me" and that "if your course has water then you need a Wahoo in your bag."[2] R-Pro's tacky surface also makes it a sensible wet-weather driver.[2]

Plastic blend significantly affects flight character. Premium plastics like Champion, Z, or C-Line generally fly more overstable when fresh and hold their stability over time. Base plastics like DX, Pro, or Active beat in faster and become more understable workhorses with use.

History

Innova announced the R-Pro Wahoo on 9 December 2010, three weeks after the PDGA approved it on 19 November 2010 under certification number 10-37.[3][4] The launch post stated flatly that "all R-Pro Wahoos are 169 grams"; Innova's current disc page instead gives the R-Pro run as 168–172 g, and IsaacSam's Innova guide says Wahoos "generally waver around the 169g mark" — the three accounts describe the same narrow window rather than a real conflict.[1][2][3] IsaacSam files the Wahoo as the successor to the DX Dragon, calling it "a faster version of the Dragon" made possible because "disc technology has improved since Innova made the Dragon," and notes it was marketed toward beginners and "sold pretty well."[1] He is equally direct that "no professional has ever bagged a Wahoo," which is why no notable throwers are listed here, and contrasts its reliability with Innova's earlier failed floater, the Dolphin.[1] The mold remains in production in R-Pro only.[2]
