The Mint Discs Longhorn is a 11-speed stable distance driver. With published flight numbers of 11 / 4 / -1 / 2.5, it is most often described as suited for distance drives that need to flip to flat and hold, moderate headwind tee shots.

Overview

The Longhorn is a distance driver rated 11/4/-1/2.5 by Mint.[2] The PDGA measured it at 21.3cm across, 1.5cm tall, with a 1.2cm rim depth, a 2.1cm rim and a 176.8g maximum.[1] Mint positions it against its own understable driver: “As our second distance driver, the Longhorn is a perfect compliment to the understable Freetail. The Longhorn is a speed based driver, designed to flip to flat just a little bit while also being able to resist moderate winds.”[2] OTB describes the flight as “neutral flying” and open to “players of all skill levels,” which is the same read Mint gives.[2][4]

Flight numbers describe the published behavior of the disc when thrown at its design speed. Real-world flight varies with plastic, weight, age, and thrower power. The community-averaged numbers above reflect crowd-sourced observations from real throws — typically slightly more understable than the manufacturer's published values, which is the most consistent pattern across nearly every commercial mold.

The Longhorn wants a flat or slightly hyzer release with real arm speed behind it. The −1 turn is enough to flip a nose-down throw to flat and hold it, and the 2.5 fade brings it back at the end, which is why Mint frames it as the wind-resistant half of a pair with the Freetail.[2][5] It fits players who overpower the Freetail and want something that still turns a little rather than fighting them the whole flight.[2] At 11 speed it is not a beginner driver.

Plastic blend significantly affects flight character. Premium plastics like Champion, Z, or C-Line generally fly more overstable when fresh and hold their stability over time. Base plastics like DX, Pro, or Active beat in faster and become more understable workhorses with use.

History

The Longhorn was PDGA-approved on 12 August 2020 under certification 20-68.[1] Mint has published no news post or dated launch announcement for the mold, so no retail release date is asserted here.[2] Production runs carry the mold code LH under Mint’s plastic-mold-run-year serial convention, running from SB-LH02-23 in Sublime to AP-LH05-25 in Apex Swirl, which is the current run.[2][3] Mint sells the Longhorn by exact gram weight rather than in brackets, an approach unusual among disc manufacturers.[3] Two of Mint’s own claims are worth separating from the record. The mold is Mint’s second distance driver, not its first; the Freetail came earlier, and Mint’s Freetail page states that the Freetail is named for “the Mexican Free-tailed Bat that is native to our home city of Austin, Texas.”[2][5] Mint has never published a naming origin for the Longhorn, so the obvious Texas cattle association is left unstated rather than asserted. Flight numbers are contested. Foundation prints fade 3, OTB prints glide 5, and one 2025 Mint run page prints turn −2 against Mint’s own 11/4/-1/2.5 on every other listing.[2][3][4] Foundation also titles the disc an overstable driver while its own body copy describes a neutral flight.[4] No designer is credited and no professional is documented bagging one.
