The MVP Amp is a 8-speed understable fairway driver. With published flight numbers of 8 / 5 / -1.5 / 1, it is most often described as suited for hyzer-flip drives that stand up and hold, gentle turnover shapes down a fairway.

Overview

The MVP Amp is an 8/5/-1.5/1 fairway driver from MVP’s 18 mm rim class. MVP calls it “a Stable-Neutral fairway driver” with “a controllable turn with substantial glide and a subtle fade,” and explains that “average throwers will get straight stable lines with a subtle fade” while “high power throwers will achieve more neutral lines with more turn and less fade.”[1] Within its class MVP ranks it between the Volt and the Shock.[1] The PDGA records it at 21.0 cm diameter, 1.7 cm height and a 1.9 cm rim, with a 174.3 g maximum weight; MVP’s own page prints 21.1 cm and markets an 18 mm rim, so the class name is not a measured figure.[1][2]

Flight numbers describe the published behavior of the disc when thrown at its design speed. Real-world flight varies with plastic, weight, age, and thrower power. The community-averaged numbers above reflect crowd-sourced observations from real throws — typically slightly more understable than the manufacturer's published values, which is the most consistent pattern across nearly every commercial mold.

The Amp’s job is a long, controlled fairway line that finishes softly rather than hard left. MVP’s framing is that “the Amp’s controlled turn allows power throwers to get a larger turnover phase than the Volt, along with reduced fade for distant placement shots that desire it.”[1] In practice that means hyzer-flip drives, gentle turnover shapes, and low-power straight drives for players who cannot hold a more stable 8-speed flat. It is not a wind disc: −1.5 turn works against the thrower in a headwind.

Plastic blend significantly affects flight character. Premium plastics like Champion, Z, or C-Line generally fly more overstable when fresh and hold their stability over time. Base plastics like DX, Pro, or Active beat in faster and become more understable workhorses with use.

History

The PDGA approved the Amp on 14 November 2012 under certification number 12-51, and announced it publicly on 23 November 2012 with MVP’s launch copy: “Amp up your game! The Amp disc by MVP Disc Sports is a smooth line shaping fairway driver that holds long straight lines with substantial glide and minimal fade.”[2][3] The mold is now out of production. MVP’s post of 29 August 2019, “MVP’s Plan for 2020 and the Future of our Lineup,” announced the retirement of 15 molds and lists the Amp in the 18 mm class alongside the Shock.[4] MVP’s product page is still live and carries no retirement notice, reading as though the disc were current — but the image it serves is filed under the name “OOP-Amp,” which matches the announcement rather than the page.[1][4] Neutron, Proton, Plasma and Eclipse are the plastics MVP lists.[1] The three players recorded throwing it in MVP’s own in-the-bag table are team members rather than touring elites, and no elite professional is documented bagging one.[1]
