The Discmania P4 is a 4-speed very overstable putt & approach. With published flight numbers of 4 / 2 / 0 / 3, it is most often described as suited for forehand approach shots that must finish hard left, headwind putts and upshots.

Overview

The Discmania P4 is a 4/2/0/3 overstable approach disc — and it is the Discmania Tactic under a new name.[2][3] Discmania states plainly that "the Tactic mold will stay exactly the same as it was just now under the P4 name," and its own collection page carries the note: "Discs using the same mold as the P4 were previously offered in our Evolution line under the name Tactic."[2][3] Discmania describes it as "designed for players who demand reliability, the P4 resists high-speed turn and holds its line with a strong, predictable fade," with "a shallow profile" that "provides a clean grip for all hand sizes."[3] The low 2 glide is what keeps it from carrying past a target.

Flight numbers describe the published behavior of the disc when thrown at its design speed. Real-world flight varies with plastic, weight, age, and thrower power. The community-averaged numbers above reflect crowd-sourced observations from real throws — typically slightly more understable than the manufacturer's published values, which is the most consistent pattern across nearly every commercial mold.

Discmania pitches the P4 as "perfect for forehand approaches, headwind putts, and controlled drives off the tee," and the flight numbers support all three.[3] Its combination of high torque resistance and low glide makes it the disc to throw when a shot has to end where you aim it rather than glide out — hard forehand upshots, wind-fighting approaches, and short overstable tee shots. It is not a putting putter; Discmania files the Originals line as "built for the advanced to professional level player seeking the tools to perform and win."[2]

Plastic blend significantly affects flight character. Premium plastics like Champion, Z, or C-Line generally fly more overstable when fresh and hold their stability over time. Base plastics like DX, Pro, or Active beat in faster and become more understable workhorses with use.

History

The mold has three PDGA certifications under three names. It was first approved as the Tactic on 16 January 2020 (cert 20-02), then as the Razor Claw Tactic variant on 5 April 2021 (cert 21-41), and finally as the P4 on 24 March 2025 (cert 25-49) — every photograph on the P4 certification record is filenamed "discmania_p4_renamed_from_tactic."[1][4][5] Discmania announced the rename on 10 March 2025, framing it as a promotion: "last year we teased a move of Evolution molds over to the Originals line, the Tactic being one of the molds up for a promotion," adding that "with its high torque resistance and consistent overstability, this mold shines best wielded by the best in the game."[2] The P4 reached the Discmania store on 26 March 2025.[2] The specifications above come from the 2025 P4 certification; the 2020 Tactic record differs slightly (1.1 cm rim, 19.1 cm inside rim diameter), which reads as re-measurement rather than a mold change given Discmania's own statement.[1][4] Two live caveats: the plain Tactic is still listed as a current Evolution model on Discmania's site, so both names coexist, and Discmania's own page contradicts itself on the numbers — the main navigation gives 4|2|0|3 while the footer list on the same page prints 4|3|0|2. The former is corroborated by every P4 product page and is used here.[3] Note also that the Shield Club C-Line P4 was molded from the Razor Claw Tactic tooling and is listed at 4|2|0|4.[6] Discmania credits no designer and names no individual player, so no notable throwers are claimed.[2][3]
