The Kastaplast Järn is an overstable approach disc rated 4.5 speed, 3 glide, 0 turn and 3 fade.[2] Kastaplast files it under a dedicated Approach category rather than with its putters or midranges, and describes it as “overstable enough to beat the headwinds and fade predictably — dedicated to the controlled approach game.”[3] The low, shallow profile — 1.8 cm tall on a 21.3 cm diameter with a 1.4 cm rim depth — is what Kastaplast means when it says the disc is “easy to grip and easy to release.”[1][2] Järn is Swedish for iron.[2]

Flight numbers describe the published behavior of the disc when thrown at its design speed. Real-world flight varies with plastic, weight, age, and thrower power. The community-averaged numbers above reflect crowd-sourced observations from real throws — typically slightly more understable than the manufacturer's published values, which is the most consistent pattern across nearly every commercial mold.

The Järn is a short-game tool for shots where the fade has to be trustworthy: hyzer approaches that need to finish left for a right-handed backhand, upshots into a headwind, and flex lines that start right and come back.[2][3] Kastaplast lists approach shots and flex shots as its intended uses.[2] Its zero turn means it will not flip out of a line even thrown hard, which is precisely why it sits alongside discs like the Zone and the Tactic in most bags rather than replacing a putter.

Plastic blend significantly affects flight character. Premium plastics like Champion, Z, or C-Line generally fly more overstable when fresh and hold their stability over time. Base plastics like DX, Pro, or Active beat in faster and become more understable workhorses with use.

History

The PDGA approved the Järn on December 13, 2021 under certification number 21-136, with a 21.3 cm diameter, 1.8 cm height, 1.4 cm rim depth, 1.3 cm rim and a 176.8 g weight limit.[1] Kastaplast has no surviving launch post on its own news blog, but retailer coverage documents a worldwide release on February 15, 2022, and reports that much of the first run in Mint was pulled for a quality failure and reground into a “First Run Regrinded” release.[4] It was Kastaplast's first dedicated overstable approach mold; the brand's Approach category has since grown to include the Sten.[3][4] No designer is credited on Kastaplast's product page, collection page or Mold Team page. The Järn is the signature mold of Kastaplast Tour Team member Joseph Anderson, who competes as “Joey Buckets” and has received both a 2025 and a 2026 K1 Hard Tour Series run.[5] Retailers file the disc inconsistently — as approach, midrange, putt & approach or putter — but Kastaplast's own classification is Approach.[3]
