The Prodigy A3 is a 4-speed overstable putt & approach. With published flight numbers of 4 / 3 / 0 / 3, it is most often described as suited for overstable approach shots inside 250 feet that fade hard and sit, forehand touch shots that must not turn over.

Overview

The Prodigy A3 is an overstable approach disc rated 4/3/0/3 — numbers encoded directly in Prodigy's own model code for the mold, "A3 4303."[3] Like the A1 it is beaded, and Prodigy positions it as flying slightly less stable than the A2 while offering an extra 30 to 40 feet of glide.[2] At 21.0 cm across with a 2.0 cm height and a 1.3 cm rim depth, it is a deep, putter-adjacent shape that fills the gap between putters and midranges.[1] Note that retailers are inconsistent: OTB and 1010 Discs list 4/4/0/3, and Marshall Street lists 3/4/0/3.[5]

Flight numbers describe the published behavior of the disc when thrown at its design speed. Real-world flight varies with plastic, weight, age, and thrower power. The community-averaged numbers above reflect crowd-sourced observations from real throws — typically slightly more understable than the manufacturer's published values, which is the most consistent pattern across nearly every commercial mold.

The A3 is a utility approach disc for shots that must finish left and stop (RHBH). It suits overstable upshots inside 250 feet, forehand touch shots where turnover is unacceptable, spike hyzers over obstacles, and windy approaches that would push a putter off line.[2] The extra glide over the A2 gives it more reach than a pure meathook approach disc, so it can also be thrown as a short, dependable tee shot on tight holes.[2]

Plastic blend significantly affects flight character. Premium plastics like Champion, Z, or C-Line generally fly more overstable when fresh and hold their stability over time. Base plastics like DX, Pro, or Active beat in faster and become more understable workhorses with use.

History

Prodigy Disc built an entire numbered approach-disc line — A1 through A5 — and the A3 sits in the middle of it. The A1 was PDGA approved on 16 November 2015; the A2 and A3 were both approved on 15 December 2015, the A3 under certification 15-70.[1] The A4 followed in May 2016 and the A5 not until December 2021. The PDGA publicly announced the A3 on 9 March 2016, quoting Prodigy's launch copy: "The A3 is an over stable utility disc that fills the gap between midranges and putters... The A3, like the A1, is beaded and will fly just slightly less stable than the A2. You can expect and extra 30 to 40 feet of glide than the A2."[2] The mold remains in current production across Prodigy's full plastic range, including a 2026 Brandon Brown signature-series run in 500 Spectrum.[4] No individual designer is credited.
